Use diffused light – as everyone else has said, avoid direct flash as the lighting produced by it is quite harsh. The best type of natural lighting is an overcast day. You can duplicate this kind of lighting in a studio with diffusing screens.
You can get soft focus filters that will give your photos a softer look, but in my opinion they tend to make the photos look very fake and overdone.
Most magazines and such are retouched in Photoshop or a similar program. Alot of the details in the final image takes place in a computer.

For the photo itself, get the flash of camera if you can using a bracket, bounce it off a refective surface and/or diffuse the light with a stofen omni-bounce or lumiquest mini softbox.
If you are shooting digital or scanning film, in post processing apply a small amount of gaussian blur at an opacity of around 30% to soften the skin.

Use natural light – late afternoon light makes warm tones. If you have to use flash use a diffuser and don’t stand too close – use a zoom lens instead. If you stand too close the person’s nose looks terrible! Have learnt from experience!

Why would we criticize your choice of camera? After all the rebel has a cool name and cool commercials going for it so it must be OK.
Club photographers tend to start out with a tamron 17-50 f2.8 and a 430EX. Over time they move to things like the 16-35 and the 17-40 and get the big 580 flash. Occassionally they’ll do some work with a fast prime or do a fisheye shot. I’ve yet to see any club photographer using a stand, a bracket for the flash at most.
Oh, and if you going to be spending a significant amount of time in club photography, invest in some made to measure ear plugs or you’ll be deaf when you’re 40.

Canon 50mm 1.8 for sheer value for money, great on low light and made for portrait shots. This will come handy when ur zoom lens can’t get enough light. Sigma and Tamron has affordable general purpose zoom lens with low F stop, Tokina on other hand is as good Canon zoom lens at lower price.
If u can afford Canon lens go for Canon 17-55mm 2.8.

Depends what your photographing.
If you are photographing people at the night club (Not those on stage) then you can forget the 50mm f/1.8, too much on the telephoto end to photograph entire people without having a lot of space in between (Which is not the case in a nightclub). The best lens for the job is 20mm F1.8 EX DG ASP RF but its quite soft at f/1.8. Next best thing is an f/2.8 lens but you will want a flash with that.
