Future Music Festival in Sydney beats a day at the races, by Eva Rinaldi

The Sydney leg of the Future Music Festival had been considerably hyped up for weeks, but I’m pleased to report that for the most part the substance lived up to the hype.
The 30 or so group line up was strong, with most attending wanting to see The Chemical Brothers, Dizzy Rascal, Kesha, Pendulum and MGMT. Well, that’s what our spies in high places tell us.

Approximately 55,000 fans filled up the venue, Royal Randwick Racecourse, better known for horses galloping around the track, rather than for people trotting from stage to stage, seeking out their favorite performing artists to grace Sydney. Royal Randwick had never looked so colourful, sounded so loud, or had been so dirty (by the end of the last performances).

The audio distribution was solid to good I thought and the visual effects, signage and support staff were very good. The vibe was awesome, or was that the company I was hanging out with? Quite possibly both.

I found it quite a challenging festival to photography mainly due to the sea of humanity, with the usual elbows in the ribs by other photographers replaced by masses of crowds bumping into myself and camera, but my in-house bodyguard of sorts helped keep most of the rascals at bay (pun intended).

Meeting a group of friendly police officers on horseback was a highlight for me, as was getting to exchange a few photography tips with David the professional photographer, who I think is just too good and genuinely friendly to be called a paparazzi. It was sure a nice change to be surrounded by colleagues who didn’t harass me, and only wanted the best, rather than the jealous and nasty ones, but enough about that for now. Aaron from St John’s Ambulance, great to meet you also, and I’m glad the emergency body count didn’t keep you too busy, but I did witness one person passing out, 3 arrests, and 2 people jumping barriers (all were later caught), but out of the 60,000 or so crowd, that’s not bad.

I was impressed by the eats and refreshments. Food was included in the ticket pricing, at least at where I got to hang with the VIP’s, and drinks were reasonably priced. Bathroom amenities were decent, with que lines not as bad as you might expect. Security officers and police were awesome to do with, but don’t tell that to the fence jumpers who got caught, some rumoured to spend the rest of the night in the clink at Randwick Police Station.

Public transport was well catered for, but there should have been more taxis frequently the area, such was the demand.

Fun level was a 9 out of 10, but I thought media access could have been a bit better catered for, since there was a bit of "cattle treatment" at the event, Mind you, I am very grateful to Future Entertainment Group for helping make this possible. Ok, my ratings out of 10 for the acts I saw…

Q&A–: question about taking candid st photography at night?
i like taking candid st photography. can anyone give me tips of how to take pictures of this sort at night, i don’t really want to buy and take a huge flashgun out just to get decent photographs i want to go off what light is available

The answer in the following: (Hint: The correct answer provided by the users, does not guarantee the right.)

Answer by AndrewM
I like to say you can get any picture with any camera in most situations. This however is one of those situations outside average camera. There is a simple idea but a few ways to get there. You need more light in the camera. You can do long exposures but everything will be blurred as soon as it moves. The next idea is a very fast lens. A 50mm 1.2 or faster is an absolute must. Leica makes the fastest at 0.75. That may not also be enough sometimes. So ISO is the next option. You want a camera that can do at least 3200 ISO. There are some with a “high” that pushes it towards 5400-ish but I don’t know which ones, you’ll have to do some research on that. Th new D3X can do 103000 ISO to see perfectly in the dark. But at $ 8000 I’m thinking out of most people’s range.

The last squeak of light you can get is with lower shutter speeds so a stabalizer might be useful. You may be able to hand hold at 1/6 with a good stabalizer if you are lucky. But blur would be an issue there and maybe not the priority you are looking for. The last thing is the most important and is totally free, sense. Make sure to do shots where these is any light at all. Downtown streets, cofeeshop windows, the carnival/Venice beach/Coney island ect.

Answer by MixedMojo
Use a faster lens, like a 50, or 85mm f/1.4. Depending on the camera used, you can get pretty good results with fast lens/high ISO shots to avoid having to use flash. What the other answer noted about using a stabilized lens is useless for street/candid photography, what good will having the ability to shoot at 1/6 a second when your subjects may move without warning? Stabilized lenses prevent camera shake, not subject motion, and candid shots are unpredictable, so I wouldn’t rely on a stabilized lens. I’d rely on a fast lens, like f/2 or faster. Look into the 50mm f/1.4, virtually every camera make has one.

Answer by Sentimental Treasures Photo
I don’t know what kind of equipment you are using… so I will say get you a 50mm 1.7 or 1.8 for low light and crank up the ISO to 400-800 depending on lighting. I’ve gotten decent result at ISO 3200 on my D200 (H 1.0 mode)

Answer by sant kabir
Open the shutter to the max. and click at shutter speed of 1/6 seconds. ISO 400 is enough.
Do it with whatever lens is on your camera.

My edited the following,This blog is about- photography tips for ..

Question–: First Time……Night Photography Help!!?
Ok, this will be my first time taking photographs at night. I was thinking about taking pictures of Chicago SKyline. I have taken pictures of the skyline before but not a night, so I got a cool location.

I have a Nikon D80 with a Zoom-NIKKOR 35~70mm 1:3.5-4.8 Manual Lens and a tripod (that’s all I have in my bag). This is the only lens I have right now, and I’m wondering if this lens good with what I’m trying to do.
Also Can anybody help me with the settings for night photography or give me any tips.
Thanks!!

The answer in the following: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

Answer by Pooky
http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/2520715156/sizes/l/

Manual exposure. Low ISO. And don’t go by the camera’s meter–under expose it for about 3 stops or so.

Answer by I wuv pink
iso 100, f8, 4-8 seconds, start with that and bracket from there

a

Answer by Steve P
As Pooky said, you are going to have to experiment with exposure, but in general, put the camera in aperture priority mode. Set your aperture wide open to avoid an excessively long shutter speed and resultant digital noise. Let the camera set it’s own shutter speed. Glad you have a tripod. Use the self timer to fire the shutter. Also, look up in your manual on how to set mirror lock up. The slap of the mirror is one of the main causes of blur in these kind of shots. After you get an initial shot, check your monitor and see if you are getting what you want. Too dark? … maually set a longer shutter speed. Too bright? … manually set a shorter shutter speed.

Also, many of the best night shots are not really shot at night. You can get a much better exposure and balanced photo if you shoot at twilight. You want it to be dark enough so the city is fully lit, but there still be light in the sky rather than completely black. This will give a beautiful very dark blue sky with the lights of the city.

Your lens will be ok, though a wider angle lens would be better. Even at the lens setting of 35mm, that will only be an effective 52mm with the crop factor in your camera. So don’t expect to be able to capture vast areas of the skyline with this focal length.

Good luck and post your photos here when you get them done! I love city skyline shots!

steve

Answer by Richard D
Tripod or sandbag to rest the camera on. Remote release or use the timer. Lock the mirror up.

Play. I’ve done shots at 5 seconds – 55 seconds from the same spot. It’s digital – you can see the results instantly.

Go manual (bulb), slowest possible ISO (usually 100) to avoid noise. Use the largest f stop for greatest dof.

Answer by Knowitall
Matt Q is correct and beret might help too

Answer by BloodyPleasure
Check out www.myshutterspace.com it’s like myspace for photographers, you upload your work and other people upload theirs and they give you feedback about your shots, but there’s also great forums for tips/help

Answer by Precious
The main and most important guidelines to making a good photograph-have a subject, draw attention to the subject, simplify. Go to the website, it’s just one page of these guidelines with a photo example and a brief analysis of each guideline. Check it out!

Answer by mjr4189
Point and Shoot.

Answer by Edwin
The best way to learn photography is by taking photography classes. If that just isn’t possible then you’ll have to depend on reading books on photography as well as seriously READING & STUDYING the Owner’s Manual for your camera.

“Hands-On Digital Photography” by George Schaub
“How Digital Photography Works, Second Edition” by Ron White
“Understanding Exposure: How To Shoot Great Photos With A Film or Digital Camera” by Bryan Peterson.

The idea is to learn about light, composition, f-stops, shutter speeds and ISO. Learn to use your camera in Manual Mode so you are in control of the shutter speed and f-stop.

I totally disagree with the “buy camera/hold camera/point camera at something you want to take a picture of/press shutter release” idea. That might be acceptable if all you want to do is learn to point and shoot. If you want to learn photography then its lousy advice.

IMO digital photography encourages what I call the “machine gunner mentality” – take 300 pictures and hope a few (10, maybe 20) are worth keeping. A person in here once stated that if they took 1,000 pictures and got 1 good one they were happy. IMO you’d get equal or better results if you just gave the camera to a chimpanzee.

I encourage the “sniper mentality” – one exposure, one good picture. Photography requires thinking. Thinking requires a slower pace. A slower pace encourages you to look at a scene from different angles – standing, sitting, lying flat on your belly or by moving a few feet right or left or by moving closer or farther away. A slower pace allows you to visualize the picture you want to make and then use your skills to make it.

I am also a “True Believer” in subscribing to at least one photography magazine. My personal favorite is Shutterbug but you should visit the library and read the ones they have and then subscribe to the one you like best.

“Pictures are not taken, they are made.” Ansel Adams

“Best wide-angle lens? Two steps backward. Look for the ‘ah-ha’ “. Ernst Haas

Answer by Perfect Myspace Avitar Kat
use a tripod, use lights, make instead of take and your images will be better

schools and teachers are the best way to learn, a night school course would be good

Answer by Jt C
your best zoom is your feet

This is a quick into into getting great fireworks images. It assumes you have a basic knowledge of SLR photography and are comfortable with trying new skills. 2 quick things I wanted to add: 1. Set your focus to “infinity” and turn your lens switch to “off” and second, if you can get a remote, that would be even more helpful when shooting in “bulb”.
photography tips portraits–: Photography tips?
Do you know how can I make skin look beter in a portrait?. When I say “better”, I mean soft, clean, etc.

Where must I put the main light?

The following is the answer: (Hint: For answers, no site audit.)

Answer by ah64dtk
dont use the flash. and place the light off center at 11 or 2 of the subject. also play around with exposure settings, white balance, diffrent zoooms and so on. also shoot on your highst resolution.

Answer by cabrina721
the way you angle it and dont shade in as mutch

Answer by obiajulum_nga
well don’t use flash and its OK for a guy to use a little make up(blush)so his face looks softer and don’t zoom in take an nice about 9 foot away picture then take it form the angles that you think you look good in if you don’t know ask for some one for there opinion

Answer by qwerty456
Use diffused light – as everyone else has said, avoid direct flash as the lighting produced by it is quite harsh. The best type of natural lighting is an overcast day. You can duplicate this kind of lighting in a studio with diffusing screens.

You can get soft focus filters that will give your photos a softer look, but in my opinion they tend to make the photos look very fake and overdone.

Most magazines and such are retouched in Photoshop or a similar program. Alot of the details in the final image takes place in a computer.

Answer by Tony
For the photo itself, get the flash of camera if you can using a bracket, bounce it off a refective surface and/or diffuse the light with a stofen omni-bounce or lumiquest mini softbox.

If you are shooting digital or scanning film, in post processing apply a small amount of gaussian blur at an opacity of around 30% to soften the skin.

Answer by redcabbage
Use natural light – late afternoon light makes warm tones. If you have to use flash use a diffuser and don’t stand too close – use a zoom lens instead. If you stand too close the person’s nose looks terrible! Have learnt from experience!

Question–: Which 2 Canon lens is good for nightclub photography portraits?
My budget is under $ 600 each. I am getting one in October, and one for Christmas.

I am going to buy a Canon T3 Kit soon maybe around early October, and my birthday is in late October, so which lens would you reconmend for nightclub and portrait photography?
Any tips would also be reconmended, I am going to read a couple of books on portrait photography too.
And please dont say i need a much better SLR camera cause i seen some guys flickr and he shot at so much clubs with that one. Also which flash and flash stand would you reconmend? thanks

The answer in the following: (Hint: The correct answer provided by the users, does not guarantee the right.)

Answer by Jeroen Wijnands
Why would we criticize your choice of camera? After all the rebel has a cool name and cool commercials going for it so it must be OK.

Club photographers tend to start out with a tamron 17-50 f2.8 and a 430EX. Over time they move to things like the 16-35 and the 17-40 and get the big 580 flash. Occassionally they’ll do some work with a fast prime or do a fisheye shot. I’ve yet to see any club photographer using a stand, a bracket for the flash at most.

Oh, and if you going to be spending a significant amount of time in club photography, invest in some made to measure ear plugs or you’ll be deaf when you’re 40.

Answer by jonny
Canon 50mm 1.8 for sheer value for money, great on low light and made for portrait shots. This will come handy when ur zoom lens can’t get enough light. Sigma and Tamron has affordable general purpose zoom lens with low F stop, Tokina on other hand is as good Canon zoom lens at lower price.

If u can afford Canon lens go for Canon 17-55mm 2.8.

Answer by Tech
Depends what your photographing.

If you are photographing people at the night club (Not those on stage) then you can forget the 50mm f/1.8, too much on the telephoto end to photograph entire people without having a lot of space in between (Which is not the case in a nightclub). The best lens for the job is 20mm F1.8 EX DG ASP RF but its quite soft at f/1.8. Next best thing is an f/2.8 lens but you will want a flash with that.

www.Berger-Bros.com One of the things that has made digital photography fun is the ability to use editing software to play around and do fun things with your photos. A big question for beginners is what digital editing software to use. Yvonne Berger, one of the instructors at Berger Brothers Camera in Amityville and Syosset Long Island, NY, warns that, for beginners, it is a mistake to go out and buy a whole bunch of software. She explains that a good program to start with (for MAC users) is iPhoto…because it’s very user friendly. However, if you’re on a PC you should start with Picasa. The next level of software would be the program Adobe Photoshop Elements. In fact Yvonne teaches an excellent 4 week course on Photoshop Elements which you can learn more about here: www.berger-bros.com
