The Rebel is an incredibly solid DSLR, one I would have killed to have at your age!
Your best bet for the photo shoot is to try your best for good light.
Also, keep in mind that people want wedding photos to be predictable. Don’t try anything crazy. Remember your fundamentals and take lots of shots of everything.

Where did you hear the term “flashlight” to describe an external electronic flash unit?

In photography, clarity is a must. Take your time and learn the proper terms for processes, equipment and techniques.
The on-board flash is good enough for shooting events like what you describe. If you were doing this for a living, then of course you would need a good high powered external flash and a diffuser of some type. I use Gary Fong diffusers on my electronic flash units.
Tips:
Cover the event as you would any other one. Just make sure that you have the cameras batteries fully charged before you attend the even … a handful of memory cards and of course a plan (team up with your cousin and see what they want specifically)
Remember to set the white balance and ISO to match the lighting that will be provided at the venue

Get the cheap canon 50mm f1.8 EF II lens
Get a murami ring flash, also pretty cheap.
This is a great event portrait set up.
Leave the lens on af, set the camera to Ai Servo and select all AF points.
Stand a distance away so that your subject almost fills the frame from their shoulders to just over the top of their head, with the 50mm on a 500D this is a very flattering portrait perspective.
The Murami ring flash is nice and even and has low contrast shadows.
To use the flash put the camera in AV mode. Set an aperture of f2.8. An ISO of 400 or 800 and leave it to it.
Failing that expose manually for the background, probably at between -1ev and -2ev then let the flash metering do it all for you.
Dead easy with pretty much guaranteed excellent results at a modest cost too.

I have seen some couple’s engagement pictures and most of the time, the couples just want to have fun with it. They do not want to be (or appear as) posed. Keep that in the back of your mind. As long as her ring shows, have fun with it!
For the wedding pictures, take lots of candid shots and make sure that you include everyone in the pictures. They are going to be looking at their pictures for many many years to come.

You did make sure the couple understands that you have no experience shooting weddings? Your Flickr is pleasant enough, but consists mostly of snapshots of places and things with only a few people shots. Shooting weddings is more complicated than pictures of horses or kids, and requires both a skill set and the equipment to do a good job. There are no do-overs and no excuses. Unless the couple is very comfortable with having a novice photographer and uncertain results, encourage them to hire a professional.
Here is a link for first time wedding shooters. It assumes you have basic photography knowledge:

Washington DC is beautiful at cherry blossom time. Good luck on the wedding.
