The best way to learn photography is by taking photography classes. If that just isn’t possible then you’ll have to depend on reading books on photography as well as seriously READING & STUDYING the Owner’s Manual for your camera.

“Hands-On Digital Photography” by George Schaub
“How Digital Photography Works, Second Edition” by Ron White
“Understanding Exposure: How To Shoot Great Photos With A Film or Digital Camera” by Bryan Peterson.

The idea is to learn about light, composition, f-stops, shutter speeds and ISO. Learn to use your camera in Manual Mode so you are in control of the shutter speed and f-stop.

I totally disagree with the “buy camera/hold camera/point camera at something you want to take a picture of/press shutter release” idea. That might be acceptable if all you want to do is learn to point and shoot. If you want to learn photography then its lousy advice.

IMO digital photography encourages what I call the “machine gunner mentality” – take 300 pictures and hope a few (10, maybe 20) are worth keeping. A person in here once stated that if they took 1,000 pictures and got 1 good one they were happy. IMO you’d get equal or better results if you just gave the camera to a chimpanzee.

I encourage the “sniper mentality” – one exposure, one good picture. Photography requires thinking. Thinking requires a slower pace. A slower pace encourages you to look at a scene from different angles – standing, sitting, lying flat on your belly or by moving a few feet right or left or by moving closer or farther away. A slower pace allows you to visualize the picture you want to make and then use your skills to make it.

I am also a “True Believer” in subscribing to at least one photography magazine. My personal favorite is Shutterbug but you should visit the library and read the ones they have and then subscribe to the one you like best.

“Pictures are not taken, they are made.” Ansel Adams

“Best wide-angle lens? Two steps backward. Look for the ‘ah-ha’ “. Ernst Haas
